French Chemist Melouin discovered in 1742 that iron no longer rusted when dipped in molten zinc. By 1836 Frenchman Sorel patented the technology where iron objects were cleaned and subsequently dipped in molten zinc, later know as thermal zincing.
The Industrial revolution with its rails, bridges and steel constructions eagerly made use of the technology, quickly followed by the application of galvanizing other steel objects like machine parts, ship propellors and other objects.
